Weaving with copper
My series of copper weaves contrasts technique and technology. Copper is chosen for its longstanding role as a material of innovation—from ancient tools to the humble penny, and now to the essential wiring of AI data centers. It endures as a material of significance within our rapidly accelerating technological landscape. This new world materializes through reflective copper fibers set against electric blue wool and graphic striping.
In contrast, tapestry and overshot techniques are adapted to form organic spirals and wood-like abstractions that reference the natural world. Through carefully developed threading and treadling sequences, encoded images gradually emerge. By emphasizing the computational nature of cloth through process, structure, and material, the digital and analog converge. This convergence suggests both hope and unease. Where digital screens function as extractive and disembodied media, textiles remain essential, dimensional, and alive. In this tension, my work reflects on humanity’s fragility, resilience, and capacity for renewal.
